I think that it’s great to connect with people from different cultures – and learning even a few words of a different language really helps with this.
Language sheets
I’m creating a series of printable language sheets to help and your family to learn how to say a few key words in the local language when you’re travelling. I’ve found that if I know how to say anything in the local language – even just ‘hello’ or ‘thank you’ – it makes a real difference to how I’m treated.
My printable language sheets include the English word, the foreign word and its pronunciation. I’m limiting the list to just 10 basic words and phrases because, in my experience as a language student and a teacher, I’ve seen that 10 is a good number of words to focus on, especially for children. My kids chose the words to include on the list.

Great idea! Your list includes the very first phrases I learned when I went to Hungary on my own years ago. It would have been so much easier and much more fun if I’d learned those phrases in Hungarian before I went to Hungary instead of having to pick them up as I went along. The only problem comes when you try to understand a long-winded reply to “Where is…….”

That’s true – that’s where miming skills come in! Thanks for commenting Jane.

What a good idea – I agree that even a small effort goes down well. If nothing else I always try to say thank you.

Thanks Cathy, I agree – it really does make a difference if you can just say a couple of things in the local language.
