If you’re considering a day trip from Bergen that offers a taste of Norway’s breathtaking landscapes without the hassle of guided tours, this self-guided full-day excursion might just be what you’re looking for. While I haven’t done this trip myself, the detailed itinerary and rave reviews suggest it’s a well-organized way to explore the iconic fjords, mountains, and charming villages surrounding Bergen.
What I really like about this experience is how flexible it is — you get transportation, scenic rides, and a fjord cruise, all bundled into one package. Plus, the fact that it’s self-guided means you can move at your own pace, linger where you want, and skip what doesn’t interest you.
On the flip side, a notable consideration is that you won’t have a guide with you, so it’s best suited for travelers comfortable navigating on their own and with good planning skills.
A fantastic experience- easy to follow instructions and breathtaking scenery
the trip was amazing unfortunately there was a rock slide so the trip was changed midway through so although it ended up being a 14 hour day we had a lot of help from get your guide who rearranged the day for us would definitely recommend .
The self-guided tour provides tickets for each leg of the transportation; there’s no guide at any point in the tour. There was sufficient time gap between various legs of the tour. While the Fjords boat tour was the best, with breathtaking scenery all around, even the ride on the Flam railway was a nice surprise.
This tour is ideal for adventurous independent travelers who want a comprehensive day of scenic highlights without the restrictions of a scheduled guide. It’s also great if you enjoy having the flexibility to explore on your own, take photos at your leisure, and perhaps squeeze in a quiet moment to soak in the views.

Starting Point and Transportation
Your day begins with a round-trip ticket on the Bergen Railway, which is regarded as one of the most scenic train journeys in Norway. The train takes you from Bergen to Voss, a charming town surrounded by mountains and waterfalls. This leg of the journey is especially appreciated for how it sets the tone with panoramic views of fjord landscapes and lush greenery.
Once in Voss, you’ll switch to a bus for a drive through picturesque villages en route to Gudvangen. This part of the trip is particularly noteworthy in the months from May to September, when the bus will traverse the Stalheimskleiva, a steep, winding road with hairpin turns and incredible views — a highlight for many travelers who love dramatic scenery.
Fjord Cruise
From Gudvangen, the tour continues with a two-hour premium fjord cruise on a modern hybrid boat. This part is often praised for the chance to experience Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord — two of Norway’s most famous fjords. The cruise is both comfortable and scenic, with the opportunity to admire towering mountains, waterfalls, and charming settlements from the water.
The reviews highlight how this cruise provides a peaceful, immersive experience, capturing the essence of Norway’s UNESCO-listed fjords. Several travelers mentioned that the cruise was “absolutely fantastic” and a major highlight of the day.
Easy connections thanks to detailed instructions in the email. Only difficulty was four of six train tickets were not in the email! Then, intermittent Wi-Fi and Internet (tunnels?) caused saved emails to disappear. Fortunately able to email request for missing ones to be sent. Advise carrying backup paper and fully charged devices. Not clear in email that bus and boat tickets were not necessary. Jackets we brought were required in fjords and fortunately it did not rain. All said, best day of our trip!
Transport arrangements were clear and we had no issues with getting on the various buses, trains and boat. We experienced sights we would not have seen otherwise, and thoroughly enjoyed the trip from start to finish. Expect some stops along the way that really enhance the day! Highly recommended, and although it may seem pricey, believe me, it was worth every penny.
It was amazing and so easy to follow the instructions. I wish we had a little more time at Voss to go on the gondola but there are only two buses to Gudvangen so I understand why that wasnt on the itinerary. Overall, it was an amazing excursion that I would recommend to everyone.
The Flåm Railway and Scenic Train Rides
Next, you'll hop aboard the world-famous Flåm Railway — a route renowned for its panoramic views of waterfalls, mountains, and lush valleys. The train ride from Flåm to Myrdal is considered one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world. Travelers often comment on how breathtaking the views are, with plenty of opportunities for photos.
Once at Myrdal, you’ll return to the Bergen Railway for the journey back to Bergen. This full segment, combining trains and water, offers a comprehensive showcase of Norway’s natural wonders, all at your own pace.

The Experience in Practice

Transportation and Timing
One of the biggest selling points is how well all the transport modes are coordinated. The tickets for trains, buses, and the fjord cruise are included, so you don’t have to worry about booking each element separately. The schedule is designed to optimize your day, with a typical duration of around 10 hours. Travelers report that the timetable keeps you moving but still leaves room for enjoying the scenery without feeling rushed.
The Value for Money
At $460 per person, this might seem like a steep price, but considering the included multiple scenic rides, cruise, and flexible itinerary, many say it’s worth it. Several reviews noted that the organization is well done, and the experience offers a lot for the cost.
Highlights and Challenges
The stunning views are, without doubt, the biggest draw. As one reviewer put it, "The scenery was absolutely fantastic," and the train routes offer photo opportunities galore. Others appreciated how easy it was to follow the instructions, making the whole day feel smooth and enjoyable.
However, a few reviews pointed out that the itinerary can feel rushed — especially if you want more time in Flåm or Voss. Some travelers wished for a bit longer at stops, but overall, most agree that the trip covers the essentials.
Weather Considerations
Weather can be unpredictable in Norway. A reviewer recommended checking the forecast beforehand, as some parts of the journey, especially on the bus route, can be shrouded in fog or rain. Packing rain gear, sun protection, and comfortable shoes is advised.
Practical Tips
- Bring comfortable shoes, since you'll be on trains, buses, and possibly walking around stops.
- Remember to carry sunglasses, sunscreen, and a sun hat — even on cloudy days, UV can be strong.
- If you’re planning to take photos, a camera or smartphone with extra battery is a good idea.
- Since food and drinks are not included, consider packing snacks and water for the day.
- Be prepared for the self-guided nature — keep your tickets handy (digital or printed), and review the itinerary beforehand.
