Genoa and Portofino Day Trip from Milan: An Honest Look

If you’re dreaming of escaping the hustle of Milan for a day to see some of Italy’s most charming seaside spots, this Genoa and Portofino tour might be just what you need. While we haven’t personally taken this exact journey, plenty of travelers seem to find it a worthwhile way to experience the Italian Riviera without the hassle of planning multiple transport connections.

What we particularly like about this trip? First, the guides who bring history and local flavor to life, and second, the opportunity to enjoy stunning coastal scenery with enough free time to explore at your own pace. That said, a key consideration is the long travel time, with about 2 hours on the bus each way, which can be tiring, especially if you’re not a fan of lengthy coach rides.

Not really worth for the price. I really appreciate our guide's efforts, but it was a rainy day and the boats were cancelled. So we didn't get to go on the boat and had to do a long trip on buses and trains. There should be a back up plan for days with bad weather.

It was a lovely experience to visit these places. The ride was all the more better due to our guide Mario as well…

For what turned into an unforeseen rainy day (forecast was cloudy in Genoa, Rapallo and Portofino) our guides were very good and kept us engaged. Mario especially was our leader throughout and he kept us on track and well informed. Our Genoa tour guide (I’m sorry to not recall her name) was seemingly expert on the various locations and palaces/mansions of the legendary wealthy families of the port city. She greatly enhanced that expedience despite the dreary weather. In Portofino the weather improved and it made for a fun visit. Too quick though as it was so beautiful to want to stay longer. Our stopover in Rapallo to have lunch and catch the ferry to Portofino was fine but impacted…

The Tour company organize a Beautiful Day to Portofino and other small Towns! Everything went according to departure time and arrival time back into Milano… Monica, the Tour guide, is very rude in her tone with the customers.. I was warned from reviews about her and I experienced it first hand.. she needs to learn how to address customers when she is speaking with them.. This is a customer service industry? Even though it rained throughout the day, it was a beautiful experience. I’ve been waiting to see Portofino for 20 years.

Excellent tour, worth every Euro we pay. Moniga is the great guide. She is not only a guide but also looking after everyone in our group. We strongly recommend this tour.

Genoa and Portofino Day Trip from Milan: It was a wonderful experience going to Genoa and Portofino with our tour guide Monica, our local guide Antonella and safe, driver Hamas. Monica was very knowledgeable, pleasant and responsible tour guide from Zani Viaggi. She made recommendations on the way to enhance our experience in each city we visited. Beautiful day started in Genao with bus/walking tour in with Antonella. My husband and I found it very informative. Lovely stop for lunch in beautiful town Rapolla. We ate their local cuisine recommended by Monica. It was an amazing meal. Our last stop Portofino, is the most beautiful and picturesque place on Italian Riviera coast. It was a very pl…

Mario and Claudio were our guide for the day. He was quite enjoyable and knowledgeable and made instructions very easy to follow. Once outside of Milan, the scenery is what you have always believed Italy to look like. Genoa was beautiful and so full of history. My Grandmother immigrated to the US from Genoa in the 1930s, so it waa more rhatn a sightseeing tour for me. Rapallo and Portofino were a dream. So beautiful. My lunch was delicious and the shopping in Portofino….very Riviera worthy! All in all an AMAZING DAY. It is a long tour..13 hours, but you guide adds in breaks for bathroom and refreshments.
Patty G
While it was interesting to visit Genoa, if you’re short on time, we would pass on it in favor of the coastal towns only.

Reviews repeatedly mention the friendly atmosphere and picturesque surroundings. Many travelers enjoy just wandering the cobblestone streets or sitting by the water, soaking up the Mediterranean vibe.

The Boat Ride to Portofino

One of the tour’s most scenic parts is the roundtrip boat ride from Santa Margherita to Portofino. The journey offers stunning views of the coastline and colorful houses lining the waterfront. This boat ride is also a great way to break up the day and enjoy the fresh sea air.

Went with my husband and another couple. It is a long day but well worth it. Our guide, Monica and driver, Claudio were the best!

Portofino is great! Monica was the best tour guide. She made all the difference. Boat tour was beutiful!
Pusar2
Monica was the best guide we have ever had! She made the trip interesting and informative. The trip was a perfect blend of activities each with enough time.

Some reviews suggest that the one-hour limit in Portofino can feel rushed, especially since many want to explore more or visit Castello Brown, the 16th-century castle with panoramic views. If you’re a photographer or a lover of scenic towns, you might want more time here, but overall, most agree it’s enough to get a good taste of the charm.

Returning to Milan

The day wraps up with the boat back to Santa Margherita, then a coach ride back to Milan, arriving around 8:30 pm. The long day can be tiring, but the scenery and guided insights make it worthwhile for many travelers.

Monica was great! Kept all her chickens together & on time! Informative & beautiful trip. Also great recommendations.
Wafa M
Great tour guide! Monica was so friendly and personable! Portofino is so cute worth going to see. Genoa has alot to offer. My only feedback make it so you take folks inside somewhere instead of just walking around. People want to go and see stuff not just walk around and doing the first few minutes tour from the bus is a waste of time. This tour agency I highly recommend!
Eric N
Our tour guide Monica was very nice and spoke in English. We had a very experienced driver and even though the roads were narrow, there were no incidents.

The cost of approximately $140 per person seems reasonable given the included transportation, guided tour, boat ride, and free time. Travelers report good value, especially considering the diversity of experiences packed into a single day.
