If you’re planning a trip to Funchal and want to really get off the beaten track, a small-group 4×4 tour like the Safari Pico Arieiro Santana offers a fantastic way to see Madeira’s less accessible but incredibly scenic spots. From mountain peaks to traditional villages, this adventure promises a mix of breathtaking landscapes and local charm—all with a guide to help bring it to life.

Two things we really like about this tour: first, it’s a small group, which means more personalized attention and less time waiting around—something we always appreciate. Second, it includes a visit to Pico do Arieiro, the island’s third-highest peak, offering some of the most spectacular views around.

A possible consideration is the weather—you’ll be going up into higher altitudes where conditions can change quickly, so dressing appropriately is key. Also, if you’re after a long, leisurely day with plenty of free time, this might feel a bit brisk, but it’s great for those who want a packed, scenic experience in one day.

Ricardo our driver/guide picked us up, right on time, just 10 minutes away from our cruiseship. With 6 other people from Britain, France and Latvia we started the tour. So we had a real European get together. Although we made several tours on Madeira, this tour is one of a totally different kind. Though we were a bit unlucky with the weather in the morning we had a lot of fun. We tried to make it to the top of Madeira's highest mountain, we did not make it because of the heavy clouds and the rain. But Ricardo offered us a very nice alternative. It really is fun to get off the beaten path and you can see that Ricardo know Madeira like his thumb. We saw so many nice and beautiful spots, to…

Netter Tagesausflug mit insgesamt 6 Personen + Fahrer. Abholung klappte gut. Erlebnis wirklich nett.

This tour suits travelers who love a mix of adventure, nature, and culture, and who enjoy small, intimate groups. It’s particularly great if you want an active day with a guide sharing stories and insights about Madeira’s landscape and history.
