If you’re looking to see Skopje beyond the usual city sights, this tour offers a unique opportunity to view the city from its surrounding mountains. We’ve come across this experience and think it’s perfect for travelers who want a deeper connection to the landscape, history, and natural beauty of North Macedonia’s capital.

What really stands out for us? First, the stunning vistas you’ll get of Skopje and its mountainous surroundings — a perspective you simply can’t get from street level. Second, the knowledgeable guides who enrich the experience with stories, local insights, and a friendly attitude.

One thing to keep in mind is that this is a fairly active tour — you’ll be hiking around 10 kilometers with an 800-meter altitude gain, so it’s not suited for anyone with mobility issues or heart problems. Still, if you enjoy moderate outdoor adventures, this one’s a fantastic way to spend a day exploring the city’s natural backdrop.

As there’s saying : every mountain has its different views, this hike definitely a must in your bucket list. Vlado is a certified mountain guide, which is necessary Incase of any hiccups, you’re covered by insurance. He ‘pampered’ us with snacks & drinks. His backpack reminds us of Hermanie in Harry potter. 3 days before our hike we received information of packing list. Weather forecast and pick up point. He proposed options according to our fitness level and our pace. A slower and steady pace ascent, to sponge up the amazing view is our request. And for decent, we prefer to focus on our footwork . There were challenging parts. Enough time for photo moments and time for breather too….

We did this recently with our guide Vladimir who is a mountain goat! In fairness he brought along extra drinks and snacks and energy foods as we didn't pack enough. What I liked about this trip is that he had planned it so that if we were feeling too stressed or tired there were ways off the mountain at various points along the trip. He had attempted to contact us the day before about the hike but unfortunately we were flying to Macedonia that day. It's a great experience followed by a lovely meal and a few beers. How bad! Recommended if you like to test yourself.

Starting Point and First Impressions

The adventure begins at the old bridge over the Treska River, a peaceful spot where the soothing sound of flowing water sets a calming tone. From here, the climb starts with a walk towards the medieval monastery of Saint Nikola Shishevski. This 14th-century site is a quiet gem, with little known about its history but well-preserved and beautiful. Our guides mention that the monastery’s upkeep was partly thanks to King Marko’s brother, Andrej, adding an authentic local touch to the storytelling.

What we loved here was the chance to connect with a piece of the past in such a serene setting. The monastery is small but full of character, and the fact that only one monk has cared for it over centuries makes it feel like a secret treasure. During the walk, your guide might serve you rakija and homemade coffee, offering a taste of Macedonian hospitality and a chance to relax before the ascent.

Hiking Through Nature and History

After the monastery, the trail becomes a little steeper, but the terrain remains manageable and incredibly scenic. Think rocky paths, wildflowers, and the distant call of cows grazing in the hills — especially from May to October, when they roam freely among the local villages.

Our guide was attentive and upbeat, making sure no one felt overwhelmed and stopping frequently for photos and rest. One reviewer, Julius, mentioned that although he and his wife weren’t experienced hikers, the guide’s cheerfulness and local stories made the challenge enjoyable. He also pointed out that on Mondays, cable cars don’t operate, so plan accordingly if you want that convenient ride up to the top.

The Viewpoint and Summit

About 20 minutes after the monastery, you arrive at a viewpoint that really takes your breath away. Here, the Treska River canyon snakes below, with the monasteries of Saint Nikola Shishevski and Saint Andrea visible amidst the landscape. It’s the kind of scene that sticks in your mind long after you leave — the perfect place to take photos or just soak it all in.

As me and my wife are not experienced hikers, for us it was a bit challenging, bu nothing cannot be fixed by cheerfull guide, his positive attitude, nice chat and some Rakia that our guide brought with him to enjoy the view with the local drink. This os literally the best tour you can have in Skopje. Just a small advice, be careful on Mondays as cable cars donot work and we ended our hile with close to 17km distance.

This tour is an absolute must when visiting Skopje. The city is small and you can visit the Old Bazar and all attractions easily in 1 day. So if you have multiple days here I highly recommend booking this hiking tour. Our guide Vojo took us on one of the most amazing hiking tours I have ever participated in. I am not an experienced hiker but this hike was perfect for escaping the City and seeing all the beautiful nature and landscapes that Skopje has to offer. Plenty of breaks are provided for rest and great scenic photos. Vojo is an absolute professional that will show you trails and views unlike any other and also just a really great and funny person that provides great conversation the en…

From this vantage point, it’s a short but steep walk to the peak called Kota, where you'll be rewarded with a panoramic vista that encompasses Skopje, the Shar Mountains, Skopska Crna Gora, and Mountain Kitka. As Thomas notes in a review, the guide, Vojo, made the experience special with his local insights and friendly manner.

At the summit, you can choose your next move: either hike down to the St. Pantelejmon Monastery or continue a further two hours to the Millennium Cross. Both options offer remarkable perspectives and insights. The small Byzantine church in the monastery complex dates back to the 12th century, offering more historical intrigue for those interested.

The Two Pathways from the Summit

  • Hiking to the Millennium Cross: For those who want a longer walk, this option takes you to the iconic cross, which is visible from much of Skopje and offers spectacular city views from above. The trail up is accessible, but remember, it adds about two hours and extra effort.

  • Downhill to Saint Pantelejmon Monastery: Alternatively, you can descend towards the small but fascinating 12th-century Byzantine church, part of a peaceful monastery complex. It’s a quiet spot that feels like stepping back in time, perfect for a reflective break.

Tour Logistics and Practicalities

The total tour lasts about six hours, covering roughly 10 kilometers with an elevation gain of 800 meters. The group is small, capped at seven people, which helps keep the atmosphere relaxed and personalized. Transportation from your hotel to the starting point is included, which makes the experience seamless.

Cost-wise, the tour includes transfers, visits to medieval churches, tickets for Saint Pantelejmon, a cable car ride, and a local drink of beer at the Millennium Cross. This all adds up to good value, considering the diverse sights and the guided expertise you get.

What to Bring and What to Expect

Prepare for your hike with sunglasses, good hiking shoes, and perhaps a small backpack with water and snacks. The terrain is rocky and can get warm, so comfortable footwear and sun protection are essential. You’ll also want to carry personal medication if needed.

The guides are multilingual, speaking Bulgarian, English, German, Macedonian, and Serbo-Croatian, which makes communication easy. They’re experienced and passionate about sharing Skopje’s landscape and history, making the walk both informative and engaging.
