Exploring the Swiss Alps: Bernina Red Train & St. Moritz Tour from Milan

If you’re dreaming of reaching the snow-capped peaks of the Swiss Alps without the hassle of planning every detail, this Bernina Red Train & St. Moritz tour from Milan might catch your eye. While I haven’t taken this exact trip myself, it’s a popular choice among travelers looking to combine scenic train rides with charming mountain towns, all in one day.
What makes this tour appealing are two standout features: the iconic Bernina Red Train journey—a UNESCO World Heritage route—and the chance to explore the luxurious resort town of St. Moritz. The combination of a coach ride through Italy and Switzerland plus a scenic train ride through some of Europe’s most stunning landscapes sounds pretty unbeatable.
Overall great experience. It was a good opportunity to be able to go to Switzerland. Our guide was Angelo and driver Javier. They were amazing especially Javier who was able to expertly navigate the difficult terrain. We made the decision to meet at the start point at the Milan Visitor Center (Zani Viaggi). This is where the bus will pick you up and drop you off. Make sure you arrive before 7am. The bus will pick you up on the West side of the building directly across from a cafe called Café Olimpia. You are not allowed to eat or drink on the bus but there will be a stop about 1.5 hours in where you can use the restroom and buy food/water. BE WARNED THERE IS NO TOILET ON THE BUS. After t…
If you are planning to do a one day quick tour to Switzerland from Milan this tour is best option. A ride through Swiz Alps will refresh your mind and body.
Incredible experience. The views of the Alps were breathtaking. We lucked out going on a Sunday in February and were able to see horse racing on a frozen lake (yes, that’s a thing) during the White Turf Festival in St. Moritz.
However, a word of caution: this is a long day, with around 10+ hours spent traveling, so if you’re not a fan of lengthy trips, it’s worth considering whether this suits your style. That said, if you love sweeping mountain vistas, charming Alpine villages, and a well-organized tour, this experience is likely to be well worth your time.
It’s best suited for travelers who want a comprehensive taste of the Swiss Alps in one trip without the hassle of separate bookings.

The Full Experience Breakdown

Starting the Day: Milan to St. Moritz by Coach
The journey begins early, with a coach picking you up if you choose the hotel option. The drive from Milan to the Swiss border takes around 3 hours, depending on traffic, but it’s a comfortable ride in air-conditioned vehicles.
You’ll notice the scenery gradually change from Italy’s urban sprawl to the stunning mountains of Switzerland, with reviews praising the professionalism and kindness of the driver.
The trip was amazing, the guide and the driver facilities the full tour very well. There is a minor issue, there are no seatings , first come first served, our pickup was last and we were 3 we did not manage to find seats next to each other there were no empty seats in this trip at all. So imagine none of the 3 of us had a window seat nor were we next to each other. This was a major disappointment there should be a seating criteria.
Bucket list trip through the snow covered mountains! Just fabulous. It is a very long day but worth every penny/minute!!
Picked up the bus in Milan and we was off – beautiful scenery all the way To st moritz – then some free time to explore. Back to the station to experience a magical winter wonderland through the alps – it was the best day.
One reviewer remarked, “The pickup was just on time. The guide was very gentle and highly connected. The landscapes were fantastic.”
This part of the trip is more about setting the scene and getting you to the mountains, so don’t expect much sightseeing here—rather, it’s a chance to relax and enjoy the changing scenery.
Free Time in St. Moritz
Once in St. Moritz, the tour offers some free time to explore Switzerland’s most glamorous mountain town. You can stroll around the lake, admire the snow-dusted peaks, or browse local chocolatiers—Swiss chocolate is a common highlight for visitors.
Keep in mind that the town might be quieter or less lively outside peak seasons, as one traveler noted that “the town of St. Moritz was not in season, so a lot of stores were closed,” but still enjoyed the charming atmosphere.
It was an amazing trip. My kiddo loved the Alps even more than Venice. We also had a very nice and professional guide who supported our group. I have only one recommendation: please add a restroom stop on the way back. The bus got stuck in traffic, and instead of 2 hours on the road, we spent 3.5 hours without any amenities.
It’s a really long day but so worth it! Easy hotel pick up on time. Dropped at the pick up point for the main coach. One other pick up then off to st moritz. Our guide Simone and driver davide were both great. Lots of info on the way, whilst in st moritz and during the train ride. How david’s got the bus around the hairpin bends I’ll never know. A must do experience! Even had a little surprise stop on the way back which was lovely.
Interesting, the guide was pmeasant and entertainig and the driver was very careful and drove us safely home
While food is at your own expense, many travelers find it worth sampling Swiss chocolates or grabbing a quick snack at local cafes. Some reviews mention the high value of the scenery and atmosphere, describing the town as “almost like out of a book.”
The Iconic Bernina Red Train Ride
The highlight of the tour is boarding the Bernina Red Train, often called the “Little Red Train,” which is famous for climbing the Swiss Alps with remarkable engineering. The train’s design allows it to handle steep and winding routes with ease. It’s a historic train, built over a century ago, yet still capable of navigating the cliff-clinging Bernina Pass, which has UNESCO World Heritage status.
Onboard, you’ll pass through some of the most stunning scenery in Europe—glacial lakes, mountain gorges, and towering glaciers. The Ospizio Bernina station, at 2,253 meters above sea level, offers spectacular views of Alp Grum, the Palu Glacier, and Lake Palu.
Multiple travelers have raved about the breathtaking vistas, with one saying, “The Bernina Red Train ride is absolutely stunning—breathtaking views all along the way, from alpine lakes to majestic mountain peaks.”
Very enjoyable day. Monica was the best and driver also very good.. The stay at St Moritz was a bit long as we did not choose to do any shopping or restaurants
I did this tour as a solo traveler on my last day in Milan. Insider tip: if you are staying anywhere near the Milan Centrale train station, do not opt for the hotel pick up as I did. I was told to be in my lobby at 6:00 AM, was picked up at 6:30 AM, driven across the city to their main departure area where I waited a half hour outside, only to get on the bus and return to the train station at 7:30 AM for a pick up. I could’ve saved myself an hour and a half by walking to the train station spot myself. Also, please realize that the hotel pick up is only a morning transfer, and you will have to get yourself home on your own at 7:30 pm. Our group size was nice, less than 20 people, so our tou…
What an awesome experience. This was my wife and I first time in Italy and Switzerland…. What a great way to see it. The tour guide and bus driver were amazing, friendly, knowledgeable and professional. It was well worth our time and money. I definitely recommend this tour.
The train’s route includes passing over the spiral Brusio viaduct, famous for its 90-degree curve. As one reviewer pointed out, “You pass over a smaller aqueduct, and the views of the mountains and glaciers are excellent.” The route’s curves and tunnels add to the thrill, making for a memorable train ride.
Arrival at Tirano and Return to Milan
After the scenic ride through the Bernina Pass, you arrive in Tirano, Italy. This brief stop is an opportunity to stretch your legs before heading back. The return journey involves the same train route, offering more panoramic views.
The tour description mentions a “short break in Tirano,” but most reviews indicate that the focus remains on the train ride and scenic views rather than extensive sightseeing time in Tirano. Expect to spend most of your afternoon on the train, soaking in the mountain scenery.
The Final Leg: Milan in the Evening
The journey concludes with a coach ride back to Milan, often arriving late in the evening. The return trip is a good time to relax and reflect on the day’s sights. Reviews note that the bus ride back can be long, with some travelers mentioning the duration—around three hours or more. A positive review said, “The bus ride there and back is a little long, but the train ride is very nice.”
Make sure you are ready to go upon pick up if you’ve chosen the option; immediately get in line for the bus who’s waiting upon arrival at meeting point. People are waiting in line already as you arrive. The ride to Saint Moritz is 2.5 hours but will have ONE rest stop on the way. Upon arrival the tour guide will tell you the meeting point DO Not Miss this because we did but thankfully I had WhatsApp and company # and was able to contact them. Also, important to remember your guide name or even bus driver. Enjoy time your time because we certainly did and our ride on the Bernina train was amazing and unforgettable. We will definitely come again. A worthwhile trip. The train ended at Terr…
The bus ride up was just as interesting as the actual train ride. We had poor visibility due to the weather but it was still a good way to see the magnificent alps.
Failed to meet expectations. 1. Sold as an English tour only- – not true. 2, The tour was 100% full. The train portion was one rail car reserved which created a 100% packed car. Therefore 1/2 the customer did not have window viewing and I impossible for other to get access for photos. It was a terrible cramped situation and it wasn’t necessary because there was a lot of open seating in the other rail cars
What Really Sets This Tour Apart
Many travelers highlight the expert guides and well-organized logistics. For example, one reviewer appreciated the guide “Alejandro,” describing him as “very knowledgeable and funny.” The guides often provide helpful commentary about the region, the engineering marvels of the train, and the scenery.
Plus, travelers appreciate the value for money—for $150.07, you get a full day of transport, guided commentary, and the UNESCO-listed train journey. Considering the cost of separate train tickets or guided tours, this package offers a lot of bang for your buck.
The Practicalities and Considerations
While most reviews praise the overall experience, some highlight points worth considering. The length of the day can be challenging for those who prefer shorter excursions—many reviews mention it’s a full, long day with over 10 hours of activity.
Some travelers mention that seating on the train can be tight, especially if you’re traveling in a group of four without guaranteed seats together. A traveler noted, “Parties of four are not always seated together,” which can be a little disappointing if sharing the experience with loved ones.
The food situation is entirely at your own expense, so packing snacks or a picnic might make the day more comfortable. Weather can also be variable—dress in versatile layers, as mountain weather can change quickly.
One review recounted a less-positive experience, noting they were left behind and couldn’t make contact with the tour operator. While such incidents seem rare, they remind us to double-check pickup details and stay in contact if possible.

If you’re a fan of engineering marvels, stunning vistas, and a well-organized trip with guides, this is a solid choice. However, if you prefer shorter excursions or traveling light, the long day might not be for you.
