When you’re planning Krakow, this Auschwitz-Birkenau & Wieliczka in one day tour is the kind of itinerary that changes how you see a place. We like two things most: the day is tightly organized with hotel pickup/drop-off, and both sites include a guided component that helps you make sense of what you’re seeing. Add in the entrance fees being covered (for Auschwitz, and—at least by most accounts—at Salt Mine via an extra charge sometimes noted in reviews), and it can be a solid, practical way to do a lot with limited time.
One consideration: it’s a very long day with lots of walking and steps, including a steep descent into the Salt Mine. This is also not recommended for travelers with claustrophobia, and Auschwitz isn’t recommended for kids under 14.
This tour suits you best if you want to check two major bucket-list items in a single day from Krakow and you appreciate help from knowledgeable, English-speaking guides at both locations.
Really good tour and smoothly run. Only negative was i couldn't sit next to my partner on the travelling bus. I think that should have been considered.
Michel is very efficient, helpful, and service with a smile. He is one of the best tour driver I ever had, and I do travel a lot.
Amazing tour! Our guide/driver was great. We accidentally got lost and missed our time at Auschwitz and everyone was really accommodating and got us onto a later group.

Tour Snapshot: What You’re Really Signing Up For
This is a day tour from Krakow to two of Poland’s most important destinations: Auschwitz-Birkenau and the Wieliczka Salt Mine. The tour lasts about 10–11 hours, with a stated start time of 9:00am and pickup available from your hotel/hostel/apartment or a specific address you provide.
It’s priced at $156 per person and the tour is described as including round-trip transport, entrance fees (with a note below about a possible Salt Mine fee situation raised in reviews), and guided elements. The provider is Cracow Local Tours, the tour is in English, and the maximum group size is listed as 30 travelers.
We see the best value here if (1) you’re staying in Krakow and (2) you want to avoid DIY transportation and scheduling stress. You’re paying for time and guidance as much as the locations themselves.

Why This Combo Works (Auschwitz in the Morning, Salt Mine in the Afternoon)

The itinerary is designed so that the heavier emotional content lands first: you head to Auschwitz-Birkenau for about 3 hours, then later you go to the Wieliczka Salt Mine for about 3 hours of visiting. That pacing matters. Several reviews point out that while Auschwitz is harrowing, the Salt Mine provides a very different feeling—bright underground spaces, carved details, and a calmer vibe—after the morning’s intensity.
We had a Great day The Driver was lovely and friendly Will definitely book again Thank elaine and kirsty
A highly recommended this tour and this tour operator. We where picked up close to are hotel at the time specified. The Auschwitz-Birkenau is a must see but harrowing experience and the salt minds spectacular.
Michael was our fearless driver who drove us to and from Krakow. He was very organized, even though the other groups that were with us were not (they were late ~20 minutes, which delayed our tour). He kept us updated on the time schedule. A great experience visiting a very somber place. I highly recommend it.
Practically, it also helps with crowd flow. The reviews include mentions of getting to Auschwitz earlier to reduce queue time, though your exact timing will depend on your departure and local conditions. Either way, you’re not wasting hours figuring out transport between cities/locations on your own.
The Big Picture on Timing: Don’t Underestimate a Full Day

From what travelers describe, the day often stretches close to a full working day (roughly 7am–7pm or similar), even though the advertised duration is “10 to 11 hours.” One common theme in the reviews is that the schedule can be demanding but smooth: pickup early, steady movement between locations, guided sightseeing blocks, then an evening return to Krakow.
This is where comfortable planning pays off. You’ll likely want breakfast before pickup if it’s very early, and you should wear shoes that can handle walking for hours. A few reviews mention uneven, slick paths at Auschwitz/Birkenau in bad weather and stepping down/up frequently.
Transportation and Group Setup: Pickup Is a Real Convenience

The tour includes hotel pick-up & drop-off via an air-conditioned vehicle, and WiFi is listed on board. Reviews praise drivers for being organized and communicative, with several mentions of guides/drivers staying on top of timing even when other groups were late.
This was an excellent trip. Was collected on time and looked after very well all day. Provided with a lite lunch which was welcomed. The day is a long day with plenty of walking so comfortable shoes are a must. Would definitely recommend this trip
A haunting visit to Auschwitz that feel everyone needs to see and hear so we never forget. Followed by a tour of the Salt mine that takes you deep underground to the many caverns and monuments in this iconic site. Be warned its a long day but does mean you make the best of the time available if not got a lot of time. Joseph, our driver did a great job Shepard I got us to both venues and making sure we got the most out of the day.
This tour was excellent from the very beginning. The driver was brilliant very professional and even told us interesting facts and places of interest whilst driving to and from locations. The lunch that was provided was basic but still tasted good. The tour guides at both places were very informative and shared lots of knowledge with us. It was a long day we were picked up at 9am and dropped back off at 7pm but it was well worth it. If you go in the summer like we did it is worth taking hats etc as auschwitz 2 is very open and if it is sunny there isnt much shade. An emotional experience and a must when visiting Krakow. I would definately recommend this tour
Seat selection appears to be a minor downside for some couples—one traveler said they couldn’t sit next to their partner on the bus. It’s not something you can fully control unless you book a more private setup (and “private transportation” is listed as not included). Still, in general, the transport component is considered well run.
Stop 1: Auschwitz-Birkenau (3 Hours, Admission Included)

This visit is the core of the day. The Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum sits on the grounds of the former Nazi German concentration and extermination camp. The tour information emphasizes the site’s scale (nearly 200 hectares, many buildings and ruins) and memorial status, including permanent exhibitions and original buildings of the main camp (Auschwitz I) and the second camp (Auschwitz II – Birkenau).
What we liked here, based on the tone of the reviews, is how important the guide’s delivery seems to be. Travelers repeatedly mention that the camp tour was handled with strong English, sensitive interpretation, and good pacing. One review even called out how the guide walked at “a good speed” and explained the history thoroughly. In places like this, having someone who knows what to highlight—and when—matters more than seeing “everything.”
What you should know for your own comfort: this is outdoors, particularly at Birkenau, and weather affects the experience a lot. Multiple reviews mention cold conditions, icy footing, and open exposure to sun/wind. Bring warm layers, and consider something water-resistant if rain is possible.
Very informative tour and our driver was great. Learnt a lot of things that I didnt know. Quite surreal to see the camps and the salt mines were amazing, would definitely recommend.
Excellent well organised trip myself and my boyfriend were very touched by the history of aushwitz a real eye opening trip and lots learnt
Driver was very nice and car(minibus) was spotless and very comfortable, camps are about 1.5 hrs out of Kraków.. the weather on the day was horrible so be advised. Lots of walking and paths are very uneven and covered in puddles , on the day was sleet rain all day, very cold so wear warm clothes and proper shoes not runners if the weather is going to be bad. Paths are paved with large puddles Our driver (Peter) had umbrellas at hand . Birkenau is ALL outdoors. But weather added to the experience Guide was excellent, approx 5 mins drive between the two locations Salt mine was about 1hr from camps and we had about 1 hour to have a break before tour… lots of walking again .. and steps .. mo…
Also, there are luggage constraints: bags and backpacks larger than 30x20x10cm aren’t allowed on museum grounds. Smaller luggage can be handled by storing it in the vehicles free of charge, according to the tour notes. Plan what you bring so you’re not stuck carrying big bags around.
A practical note: Auschwitz entry and age guidance
The tour explicitly states Auschwitz is not recommended for children under 14. If you’re traveling with teenagers, you may still want to consider the emotional intensity, but at least this keeps expectations grounded.
Getting From Auschwitz to the Salt Mine: How the Day Transitions

After the guided Auschwitz block, the vehicle transfers you onward to the Wieliczka Salt Mine. Reviews mention that transfer times are managed, and there are occasional breaks for restrooms along the way (exact timing varies by traffic and day-of conditions).
One recurring theme in the reviews is that after your long morning at Auschwitz, you might feel mentally “switched on” and then “reset” as the Salt Mine begins. That shift can be helpful—especially for travelers who say they weren’t sure they wanted to go to Auschwitz beforehand.
Great tour, greats guides. It was very organized and the guide was really good explaining the history
Fantastic day ! Disappointing that we couldn't get to Birkenau as it was too slippery underfoot. The salt mines and Auschwitz were amazing ! I think it should become part of the school curriculum. This was my 5th visit but I shall certainly be back.
Long day but well worth it, not a tour for a young family. Our tour guide was very good and informative. The tour of the camps is a must see amazing and very sensitive. The overall cost is good value with a pack lunch included. When booking make sure cost includes for the entry to all. We still had to pay for the mine entry. The mine visit is okay but I would not rush back. You are emailed your pick up point and time, make sure you are on time. The coach was very good clean and tidy. The driver was experienced and did not think he was Lewis Hamilton. This was one of my tick boxes and I am glad I did. Viator made very easy.
Stop 2: Wieliczka Salt Mine (About 3 Hours, Guided, Admission Included—But Read Carefully)

The Wieliczka Salt Mine is one of Poland’s best-known attractions, and the tour notes describe its Middle Ages origins and major historical significance, with a visit time of about 2–3 hours. Temperature underground stays 16–18°C year-round, which is useful because no matter when you travel, you’ll want a layer for the mine’s cool air.
Visually, it’s the opposite kind of attraction from Auschwitz: the “wow” factor comes from the carved spaces and features that are created from salt rock, along with mention of sculptures carved out of salt rock and saline lakes. In a couple reviews, travelers said the salt mine was spectacular and “jaw dropping,” while others called it an important contrast to the morning’s darkness.
Physical demands: stairs and walking count
Don’t treat the Salt Mine as a quick indoor tour. The description calls out a steep descent via “several hundred steps,” and reviews confirm there are stairs down and walking throughout. Some travelers mention around 800 steps down and additional walking distances.
So, you’ll want moderate physical fitness, and the tour itself warns it isn’t recommended for travelers with claustrophobia. If stairs are hard for you, this is the part of the day that will likely challenge you most.
One fee surprise that comes up in reviews
The tour lists admission tickets included. However, multiple reviews include reports that travelers had to pay an extra fee at the mine (examples mention drawing out money to pay a fee in PLN). Reviews also note different ways lunch/entry were handled depending on what system worked on the day.
Because this isn’t consistent in the written details, the safe approach is this: when you book, confirm exactly whether Salt Mine entry is already covered in your voucher and whether any additional charges might be required. If you don’t want uncertainty, bring a bit of extra cash just in case.
Included Extras That Improve Value

Here’s what the tour includes: hotel pickup & drop-off, air-conditioned vehicle, WiFi on board, skip the tickets line, a professional English-speaking driver, official museum guide, and all fees and taxes (per tour listing).
In real terms, “skip the tickets line” is worth money when you’re combining two major sites in one day. It reduces wasted waiting—especially helpful at Auschwitz/Birkenau. More than one traveler praised how smoothly the day ran, suggesting these logistics actually work better than a DIY plan would.
Lunch and Breaks: Plan on “simple” or “planned restaurant time”
Lunch is not included as standard in the tour listing (“Lunch Available for an additional fee”), yet the reviews are mixed. Some travelers mention an included “packed lunch” or lite lunch, while others mention eating at a restaurant or arriving at certain meal times. One traveler even advised not to waste time at a restaurant they were taken to, which implies the option existed but wasn’t universally loved.
Given this mismatch, the most practical stance is: plan to buy food or pay for lunch unless your booking confirmation clearly states it’s included. Many long-day tours provide at least a meal opportunity; the best you can do is confirm the exact arrangement when you receive your itinerary details.
What to Pack: We’d Bring the “long day survival kit”
You’re dealing with cold outdoors at Auschwitz/Birkenau and cool underground temperatures in the mine, plus walking and steps throughout. Reviews repeatedly stress shoes and warm clothes, and we agree. Consider:
- Comfortable, supportive shoes (not just for comfort—also for slippery paths).
- Warm layers for Auschwitz/Birkenau; bring gloves/hat if traveling in colder months.
- A layer for the mine (since it’s about 16–18°C underground).
- A way to keep track of your ticket details: the tour requires passport name and surname details because tickets are personal.
- A bottle of water and snacks can help if you’re worried about timing, since you may have limited opportunities to eat during transfers.
Also note: the tour says it operates “in all weather conditions,” so pack for rain and cold even if Krakow looks nice that morning.
Service and Guide Quality: The Part Travelers Seem Happiest With
The strongest recurring praise in reviews isn’t the scenery—it’s the people. Many travelers call out guides as “very informative,” “fantastic,” “professional,” and respectful. Drivers are often described as organized, updated, and attentive, with specific praise for how some drivers handled situations when other groups ran late or when travelers got briefly off schedule.
A couple traveler stories highlight how customer support works on the fly. One review says they got lost and missed their Auschwitz timing, but the staff helped get them onto a later group. Another mentions the operator being accommodating when communication about ticket redemption got confusing.
So if you value clear guidance and steady handling of logistics, this tour’s reputation seems well earned.
Downsides and Who Should Skip This Tour
This is not an easy half-day outing. Reviews and tour notes point to several possible deal-breakers:
- Long day and lots of walking, including steps.
- Uneven ground at Auschwitz/Birkenau; icy conditions can affect footing.
- Not recommended for children under 14 (and young families may find it a heavy fit).
- Not recommended for claustrophobia due to enclosed spaces/stairs underground.
- Some travelers encountered communication clarity issues the night before about ticket redemption and what documents were needed (though this seems to have been resolved by contacting the operator).
If your goal is a relaxed “see the highlights” day, this might feel like too much intensity back to back. If your goal is meaningful history and a major Polish site, it delivers—just with a full-body workload.
Should You Book? A Straight Call
We’d recommend booking this tour if you: want both Auschwitz-Birkenau and Wieliczka in one day from Krakow, value guided explanations (not wandering through on your own), and are okay with a long, physically active day. Reviews strongly support “good value for money” because you get transport, guidance, and skip-line logistics.
We’d suggest thinking twice if you: have limited mobility or dislike lots of stairs, are claustrophobic, are traveling with children who are too young for Auschwitz, or you can’t handle very early starts. And if you’d rather avoid any chance of additional mine entry fees, double-check your confirmation/voucher details before you go so you’re not relying on “maybe it’s covered.”
In the end, this itinerary hits two ends of the emotional and sensory spectrum: one somber and essential, the other surprisingly beautiful underground. If that balance sounds like what you want, this is a tour that many travelers say is not to be missed.
